Garden Diary

Peas, dwarf beans and broad beans sown on the 8th Feb began flowering over the past week.

That was 6 weeks from being sown, which is pretty bang on and the plants are very healthy.

Seems amazing as the broad beans previously sown in the side bed at the start of December are also only just flowering.  That's, er, almost 4 months...

So, clearly planting in a bed that is mostly clay, with some sandy loam and compost dug through, even though it's shaded for a long period every day, is more effective than planting in undoctored, virgin silty loam!

Well, perhaps everything there being slug eaten, snail munched, sucked dry by passion vine leaf hoppers and then harlequin bugs, and generally neglected didn't help matters.

Oh, as for the lovely, healthy, new beans...

...it took roughly 2 days from the broad beans flowering for the first aphids to turn up...!  Argh.
